Elvis Payne's Reliant goes up in Flames
Over the weekend a piece of Veloce Publishing history sadly passed away. The Reliant that formed the basis of How to Restore Reliant Regal is now reduced to ashes. However, all is perhaps not lost as there is hope the legacy can in fact, live on...
"I was on my way to a Reliant Rally and had covered about 50 miles when I pulled over as I was following my brother in his Reliant and he broke down. When I then restarted my car, there was a strange pop and the car burst into flames. We battled to save it but the fire spread within minutes.
The fire brigade got there really quick but my car burnt faster. Sadly it has been totally destroyed.
It was insured as a classic car and because of its A1 condition I have a valuation certificate from the insurance stating they value it at 3,000. So I shall have to wait and see what happens.
As strange as it seems I have been getting emails galore from Reliant owners who feel some connection to the car whether it be though the book, via my web site or by owning a model. It is almost as though a person has died.
Everyone is saying that due to the book, web site and its appearances in magazines it is too important to lose. (Last year one great article was in Practical Classics when the car was test driven by Chris Barrie (aka Rimmer from Red Dwarf). The chassis looks good and I will be asking the insurance if I can buy it back. I shall test it and if OK (and if the DVLA are happy), then I will restore the car again from the ashes. I have already had offers of three bodies and numerous parts.
Despite the shock of this, next month my brother and I are off to the North Cape, we will be driving 4,000 miles through France, Sweden and Norway ... in a Reliant Robin! :o)"

Description
After the Second World War, Japanese toy makers made tinplate replicas of many American and European cars, often reaching surprising heights of realism. Today, these tin cars are the most desirable of all vintage toys, fetching prices at auction in excess of diecast cars such as Dinky Toys. Seeking out the finest examples of these toys has been a lifelong passion for Bruce Sterling of New York, who has allowed his collection to be pictured in this volume.
150 of the rarest and best toys are shown, all of them in pristine condition with their original boxes. Cadillac, Chevrolet, Buick, Packard and many other famous American names are represented, in addition to a good selection of European vehicles. All the toys are described in detail and background information is provided about the prototypes on which they are based. A guide to current values is also given. This is a book that will be treasured, not only by specialist collectors, but by all who are passionate about vintage toys and classic vehicles.
Synopsis
Tin toys had been made in Japan before the second World War but they reached new heights of realism in the 1950s. The post-war American occupation of Japan gave Japanese toymakers ready access to the lucrative American toy market and as a result most of the tin toy cars made in this period were based on American vehicles like Cadillacs, Chevrolets, Buicks, Oldsmobiles and Packards.Like the real things, these tin toys were big. A small one would be around eight inches long, with some of the largest stretching to eighteen inches. As such, tinplate was the ideal medium to capture the look of American styling of the 1950s, a period when size mattered and car manufacturers tried to outdo each other with the extravagance of their designs, the size of their tailfins and the amount of chrome. During this era of consumerism, Japanese toy production was at its peak, with exotically-named manufacturers like Marusan, Bandai, Yonezawa and Alps turning out vast quantities of tin toys. It proved to be a short-lived phase in the history of toy production. By the early 1960s, tin toys were falling out of fashion for various reasons: their sharp edges gave rise to safety concerns; die-cast models were becoming increasingly realistic and sophisticated, with many action features that appealed to children; the development of plastics in the toy industry made tin toys look increasingly old-fashioned. Half a century later, there are very few surviving examples of these magnificent playthings. Bruce Sterling of New York has devoted years to seeking out the very best examples of Japanese tinplate cars and has built up what is probably the worlds finest collection of these toys, every one of them in pristine condition, complete with their original boxes which are works of art in themselves. This book showcases 150 examples of the very rarest tin toy cars, many of them never having been pictured in books or magazines until now. Almost every major American motor manufacturer is represented here, together with a selection of commercial vehicles and a significant number of European cars too. All are illustrated in full colour and described in detail, and fascinating insights are provided into both the real vehicles and the companies who modeled them, together with a guide to rarity and current values. This is a book that will be treasured, not only by specialist collectors, but by all who are passionate about vintage toys and classic vehicles.

Description
From the late 19th century the progress of the movies has paralleled that of the motor car. Now, for the first time, these developments are chronicled through the medium of the movie poster. This book celebrates the progression from the simple and crude, through the functional, the ambitious, and the barking mad, right up to todays high-tech, computer-generated, often soulless examples of both cinema and automobile. By charting the poster art of the movies chronologically, the book takes you on a journey through the 20th Century in black and white, sepia, hand-colouring, stone-litho, and glorious technicolour, and shows the obsessively accurate, the artists impression, the photographic and the wildly imaginative depictions of the automobile. With 250 pictures of rare originals, and a star rating system for rarity, this is a beautiful book to browse, as well as valuable investment guide.
250GP replacement to be unveiled Saturday
Despite heavy opposition from KTM and Aprilia, it's expected that the rules change will pass. To allow those companies time to adapt (companies who have significantly more experience racing two-strokes than four), it's expected that there will be a one-year moratorium on new teams entering the class, taking effect once the rules are implemented. Check back Saturday for full details.
250GP replaced with four-stroke 625-650cc inline-fours
While the new capacity may sound too close to MotoGP's 800cc limit, the changes are intended to drastically reduce costs. Right now, at about €1million, leasing a 250cc GP bike is only about one-third cheaper than a MotoGP machine. Under the new rules, that cost would drop to less than €100,000. That seems to be the driving reason for these drastic changes, so while we will mourn the loss of yet another two-stroke racing class, we will welcome more accessible, more competitive racing.
Final details of the rule changes will be announced after they are ratified June 7 at the Catalunya GP.
