Car Inspirate: November 2008

Vintage SUV - Wagoneer van Bandung

Sejak rutin membeli majalah Jip saya jadi terekspos dengan kendaraan2 4wd. Tapi berhubung "dunia" yang saya geluti kebanyakan berbau jaman dulu maka untuk 4wd pun saya banyak cenderung ingin mengkoleksi mobil jadul tipe ini.

Suatu Sabtu muncul iklan jeep wagoneer di koran, namun saya hanya lihat sekilas karena belum tahu bentuknya. Sampai suatu saat saya browse di internet dan menemukan beberapa referensi gambar wagoneer ini. Buru2 saya hubungi pemasang iklan di koran tersebut dan ternyata barang masih ada. Mobil ini bermesin 6 silinder, 3200cc 4wd dan setir di sisi kiri:)

Setelah itu kami sepakat untuk saling email dan akhirnya saya bisa mengetahui photo dari mobil yang diiklankan. Modelnya cukup gagah dan dengan warna military green nya menambah "keanggunan" wagoneer ini. Saya sedikit mencari referensi ke beberapa kenalan yang tahu 4wd; konon mobil ini hanya masuk ke Indonesia dengan 2 jalur. Pertama adalah mobil militer, kedua adalah hibah dari WHO. Jadi prinsipnya di Indonesia tidak ada satu ATPM pun yang mewakili di Indonesia. Di satu sisi hal ini mungkin membuat kita berfikir dua kali mengenai ketersediaan suku cadang nya, namun disisi lain ada juga rasa ke-langkaan nya.

Cukup lama saya bimbang antara mau ambil atau tidak, akhirnya saya putuskan untuk ambil. Mobil berlokasi di Bandung sehinga saya harus menempuh 2 jam untuk tiba di lokasi. Ford Everest menemani saya ke Bandung Sabtu pagi itu. Tiba dilokasi saya langsung ketemu dengan pemilik mobil. Untuk beberapa saat saya melihat kelengkapan serta kondisi bodi secara visual, setelah itu saya minta tolong kepada yang punya untuk membawa saya mutar2 di sekitar lokasi berhubung saya belum terbiasa memakai setir kiri.

Saya akhirnya putuskan untuk langsung menggendong mobil ini ke rumah orang tua saya di Jawa Timur karena keterbatasan ruang parkir di tempat tingal saya. Handy Towing datang beberapa saat kemudian dan langsung menggendong mobil ke Jawa Timur. Rencananya saya akan sedikit modifikasi di dapur pacunya supaya bisa untuk daily use. Yang ada dibenak adalah mesin Hilux bekas....moga2 nemu jalan mulus.

VOLKSWAGEN AWARDED CAR AD OF THE YEAR BY AUTOCAR

The recent �Polo Confidence� advertising campaign for the Volkswagen Polo � also known as �Singing Dog� � has been honoured at this year�s Autocar Awards, being named Car Ad of the Year 2008. This award is voted for by the readers of Autocar on-line.

The �Polo Confidence� advert features a Jack Russell dog which is shown to be nervous and timid in everyday situations, yet, while in the Polo, �sings� happily and confidently along to the soundtrack of �I�m a man� by the Spencer Davis Group. The advertisement has so far registered over one million hits on the internet video site YouTube, while 36 fan groups were set up on social networking site FaceBook. The soundtrack, which was not re-released, also peaked at number six on the UK Rock Top 100 on iTunes.

The controversial video is memorable and funny thanks to its star of the show 'the singing dog'. Veloce also has its own dog, Immie, who may not be a celebrity herself, but with that neckerchief on I'm sure you'll agree she looks the part!

SMART2VENICE ITALIAN JOB

A smart owner has masterminded his own fundraising mission to Italy making over �5,500 for charity.
Nathan Kift, who was accompanied by his step-brother Craig Jackson, drove his 2003 smart fortwo pulse coup� over 2,100 miles to Venice and back in aid of Gloucester Royal Hospital�s Special Care Baby Unit (SCBU).
The duo were inspired to take on the seven-day driving marathon after Nathan�s son spent time in the care of the SCBU.
The smart fortwo was said to have performed superbly, especially when it came to fuel economy and crossing the Alps.

GERMAN REVIEW OF MONTREAL BOOK

A 5 steering-wheel rating in the November issue of Oldtimer Markt which says that all Montreal drivers should erect an equestrian statue to Bruce in front of their garages in honour of this excellent book, and at least baptise their sons with the middle name "Bruce"!

Last week Porsche officially opened its Driving Experience Centre adjacent to the famous Silverstone Grand Prix circuit in Northamptonshire. NISSAN GT-R - CAR OF THE YEAR AT JAPAN�S MOST ADVANCED TECHNOLOGY AWARD

GREY SKIES AHEAD

Drivers of grey cars are more likely to need roadside assistance than any other coloured vehicle, according to research by digital motoring magazine, imotormag.co.uk

With more blue cars on Britain�s roads than any other colour - over 7 million registered - they are nearly 15% less likely to call out a breakdown vehicle than their grey-hued counterparts. The research showed that green was the second most likely coloured vehicle to call for roadside assistance and Red was the least most likely.

Mat Watson, editor of imotormag.co.uk, said: �The results are genuinely surprising. One theory is that many hire and company car fleets choose grey vehicles as the colour looks newer for longer, with dents and scratches less noticeable. These vehicles are often exposed to very high mileage, so perhaps their chance of needing assistance is greater. Then again, grey cars could just be cursed!�

Subaru Leone GSR - Perjuangan ke Salatiga

Koleksi coupe lawas berikutnya adalah sebuah produk langka Subaru Leone GSR. Mobil ini keluaran tahun 1975 dengan engine bawaan kapasitas 1400 cc rakitan Fuji dari Jepang. Bentuk mobil ini cukup unik dengan grill depan yang cukup menonjol dan bagian belakang dengan tipe fastback.

Saya mendapatkan mobil ini dari seorang kolektor di Salatiga Jawa Tengah. Cukup berat perjalanan untuk mendapatkan mobil ini karena saya harus ke Jawa Tengah. Jumat malam sehabis kerja saya beserta adik dan satu orang teknisi berangkat ke Salatiga menggunakan Ford Escape tercinta. Sabtu pagi tiba di lokasi, dan langsung melihat kondisi mobil yang masih berupa bahan ini. Cukup komplit list-list nya dan surat2 sangat lengkap (tidak mati pajak).

Mobil ini konon bersaing dengan mobil-mobil coupe lain keluaran Jepang di kancah rally WRC. Sebut saja Mazda 808 dan Celica GT (lihat gambar brosur). Akhirnya setelah memastikan kondisi mesin dan lampu-lampu ok, kami berangkat kembali menuju Jakarta. Mobil beriringan dengan Subaru berada di depan Escape untuk mamastikan jika ada kendala di jalan.

Ternyata cukup bandel juga mobil Subaru ini, dijalanan bisa mampu digeber dengan kecepatan 80-90 km/jam. Sedikit kendala ditemui saat kami sudah memasuki daerah Pekalongan dan hari sudah malam, lampu depan tiba2 mati…wah terpaksa harus berhenti di pom bensin untuk merepair nya. Tidak salah saya mengajak mas Yono, teknisi handal yang juga tetangga saya di Depok karena problem bisa dapat diatasi dan kami bisa melanjutkan perjalanan setelah istrahat tidur beberapa jam.

Sampai di Jakarta memasuki pukul 10 pagi dan kami langsung menuju rumah mas Yono untuk “titip” overhaul mesin dan transmisinya. Dengan network yang dimiliki, mas Yono masih bisa mendapatkan beberapa komponen engine dari toko suku cadang di Senen dan Sawahbesar. Sekarang tinggal mengunggu pengerjaan bodi…tapi sepertinya harus ditunda dulu ….. menabung dulu agar untung:) See you on the next update kalau tabungan sudah cukup.

Mazda B600 - Proyek coba-coba karena pengin Moris

Ini merupakan proyek “coba-coba” karena penginnya punya Moris mini cooper lawas tapi seperti kita tahu saat ini model ini termasuk the most wanted jadi sangat susah. Kalaupun ada pasti harganya sudah diatas kewajaran bagi seorang yang bukan murni kolektor seperti saya :) Pilihan akhirnya jatuh pada Mazda kotak B600.

Mobil 600 cc ini lumayan sering dijumpai malang melintang di jalanan Jakarta dan sekitarnya. Ada klub penggemar mobil ini yang kalau tidak salah pusatnya di daerah Depok juga. Saya mendapatkan bahan dari informasi teman yang ternyata lokasi mobilnya tidak jauh dari komplek saya tinggal. Saya langsung iyakan untuk ambil mobil ini dan langsung saya masukkan begkel langganan saya.

Tidak lama pengerjaan cat mobil ini, sedangkan untuk mesin kondisinya sudah siap pakai. Yang menjadi tantangan adalah mengembalikan krom spion dan tutup velg ban karena kondisi karat nya cukup parah. Sedangkan kelengekapan lain yang sampai saat ini masih dicari adalah emblem serta teralis di kaca bagian belakang.

Saat ini mobil sudah parkir di depan rumah menunggu tiap Sabtu/Minggu untuk dipanasi:)

Ford Capri - Koleksi "Mustang"nya pabrikan Ford Eropa (work in progress)

Kali ini saya mulai tertarik dengan mobil-mobil coupe lawas. Ada beberapa target model yang saya inginkan diantaranya: Celica TA22, Ford Capri, Datsun dan Mazda 808.

Gayung bersambut, dari informasi yang saya terima melalui teman ada Ford Capri yang akan dilepas oleh pemiliknya di daerah Ciputat. Setelah janjian dengan empunya saya meluncur ke lokasi mobil. Cukup jauh lokasinya dari rumah saya. Setelah tiba di lokasi saya cukup takjub dengan mobil Capri tersebut. Kondisinya masih utuh dengan dibalut cat hitam dan jok dilapis kalep warna gading.

Pemilik mobil menjelaskan kalau dulunya dia hobi mobil kencang dan ini adalah hasilnya. Saya lihat keadaan mesin agak kaget karena ternyata mesin yang terpasanag bukan aslinya. Engine Mitsubishi 2 iter (ex Galant) duduk manis di kompartemen. Saya tanyakan ke pemilik ternyata mesin asli dan transmisi masih disimpan...whuih...aman. Setelah bernegosiasi akhirnya tercapai kesepakatan. Mobil saya tarik dengan derek karena kondisi tidak hidup.

Untuk urusan pengerjaan saya serahkan ke bengkel dekat rumah saya. Saat ini mobil masih dalam pengerjaan...semoga hasilnya cukup bagus. Capri warna merah adalah contoh gambar.

PROJECT SPLITWHEEL

World First - New Caterham To Be Created Online by the public.

A chance to be part of automotive history, people can join �Project Splitwheel' at www.splitwheel.com. From here, members from all over the globe are able to submit ideas and concepts for every single aspect of the new Caterham and discuss and debate them with other users, before ultimately voting on what makes it to the final vehicle.

The Splitwheel.com website will use a combination of articles, blogs, forum discussion, a Wikipedia-style user-edited knowledge base and a comprehensive voting system to turn user input into a workable vehicle design. Along with acting as a liaison with Caterham's engineering team, Project Splitwheel will also provide guidance and input from automotive industry experts as required.

Starting from a blank sheet of paper and with very few restrictions in place, the result should be an exciting and truly unique performance vehicle.

On the subject of designing cars, there is an exciting book on the way from Veloce. Next year will see the release of How to illustrate and design Concept Cars by Adrian Dewey.

WE'VE SEEN PANDAS, NOW WE HAVE.....BAMGOO

An electric car with a body made out of bamboo.

Researchers at Kyoto University have made this car from bamboo because of its light weight and toughness. Named BamGoo, the electric car only weighs 60Kg, which is lighter than most drivers and the battery will run for 30 miles.
